I make these knives from 0-1 steel flat stock, and the punches from old auger bits. In use, once a round hole is drilled for a pin, you square the entrance of the hole with the punch. After sinking a square pin into the hole it is shaped into a pyramid with the knife.

These knives come sharp with a flat, hollowed out, back. . To resharpen, work the back: with the back flat on a course stone roll a burr onto the bevel side. Polish the back to your final grit, and remove the burr on the bevel side with a strop.

The winter 2025 batch is made from tropical hardwood scraps I’ve been carrying around, and some of my favorite domestic woods. Moving forward I’ll be using mostly Sugar Maple.
